To kick off its 21st season of Raíces y Vuelos, Sarasota Contemporary Dance partners with acclaimed bassist Johnnie Barker and The Barker Project for a high-energy collaboration that fuses live music and contemporary dance into an electrifying shared experience. Known for their signature “musical gumbo” of jazz, funk, blues, rock, and gospel, The Barker Project brings a fluid, improvisational sound world that meets SCD’s dynamic movement language in real time. The result is an unpredictable, exhilarating performance where music and dance spark, respond, and transform one another on stage—launching the season with bold creativity, deep roots, and fearless flight.

SCD deepens its connection to the Rosemary District, a community that has been such a meaningful home for our work. Inspired by the district’s vibrant murals and creative energy, launches new project…Mural in Motion is a site-responsive performance series that activates five murals throughout the Rosemary District through contemporary dance and live music. Each mural becomes a living stage for original choreographic works, inviting audiences to experience the neighborhood through movement, sound, and visual art.
The project will be presented as a series of three curated performances, each welcoming over 100 audience members per show.
Audiences will move together through the district, experiencing a guided journey of performances that reflect both the identity of the murals and the spirit of the community surrounding them.

Dance Makers is a signature SCD performance presented at the Cook Theatre at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts, January 14–17, 2027, as part of Sarasota Contemporary Dance’s 21st season of Raíces y Vuelos. As the season’s third main event, this sold-out program showcases bold new works by leading contemporary choreographers—including Orange Grove Dance, Madison Pineda Bender, Gabriel Speiller, Frank Chavez—each offering distinct and innovative movement perspectives. The evening also features a special guest appearance by REVolutions Dance of Tampa, Florida, a physically integrated dance company performing a work by SCD’s Artistic Director. Together, these artists create an electrifying program that celebrates innovation, collaboration, and the evolving language of contemporary dance.

Sarasota Contemporary Dance closes its 21st season of Raíces y Vuelos with a powerful reawakening of its celebrated collaboration with enSRQ—returning for the first time in over five years in a bold, expanded, and immersive new form. Set within the historic Sarasota Opera House, this one-of-a-kind work brings together rhythm, dance, and song from around the world in a lively exchange of movement and music, developed with Samantha Bennett and George Nickson, and choreographed by Leymis Bolaños Wilmott. Featuring a striking site-responsive scenic installation by St. Petersburg-based multidisciplinary artist Sharon McCamn, the evening transforms the stage into an electrifying space of reinvention and connection. The season culminates in two performances inviting audiences to experience a rare and unforgettable convergence of artistry, collaboration, and live creation.
